Planning for Change:
Building Better Lives
June 20th-23rd
Are you passionate about new solutions for people who rely on services? Does it excite you when people take control over the support they receive? Can you help people to think out of the box?
SHS Trust still has space available on this exciting, challenging and thought provoking course about person centred planning. Places are open both to fee-paying participants (e.g. staff/managers for the wide range of support agencies), and free to volunteers (e.g. users of services and their families).
For this course we have a small amount of grant funding, allowing us to set fees at a much reduced level. We are keen to ensure that smaller organisations (e.g. voluntary sector projects) make use of this opportunity, since person centred planning training is more commonly available only to the staff of large service providers.
Course content:
Person centred planning helps people work out what they want from life and it helps them identify what help they need from others (including support services) to get it.
It:
* creates a partnership between people who use services and the services they use
* is designed to shift power towards the person and their allies, and to align energy and expertise around the person’s aspirationsis an inclusive method, and it assumes that inclusion is a social and personal goal
* it values citizenship and contribution and asks services to be more responsive, flexible and individualised in the way they relate to an individual.
Person centred planning provides a very different way of helping someone to organise their life where care planning and assessment don’t seem to have created real solutions.
The course will focus on supporting participants to practise facilitating Map and Path person centred planning sessions for each other. No prior qualifications or knowledge are required, but an ability to listen respectfully and intently to another person will be essential.
Facilitators can learn a great deal from being the focus for a full process, and we will make sure that as many people as possible have this opportunity. This means that the training can be challenging and personal, but also very stimulating and enjoyable. A recent course member wrote:
“This hasn’t been a course at all - the past days have been a real life lesson for me”.
Course Details
The course is organised by Scottish Human Services Trust - an independent organisation working for greater social inclusion in Scotland. It will take place at the Scottish Health Service Centre
Crewe Road South, EDINBURGH, EH4 2LF. (9.30am – 4.30pm).
How much does it cost?
The cost for people who are employed in the fields of health and social care (including voluntary sector project staff) is £200 plus VAT.
It is intended that half of the participants on this course will be ‘volunteers’ (particularly people who use services, their family members and others who might use person centred planning in a largely voluntary capacity). Subsidised places are available for a booking fee of £10.
For those with subsidised places we should also be able to meet reasonable expenses, including those for travel, childcare or personal assistance. An estimate of these should be provided to SHS Trust on the application form.

Person Centred Planning
23,24 & 25 May and 15,16 June & 27 June 2005
Cairndale Hotel, Dumfries
There’s a difference between having good support services and having a good life. SHS Trust is running a training programme for people who want to learn to use person centred planning to help people work towards having a good life.
About Person Centred Planning
Person centred planning helps people work out what they want from life and it helps them identify what help they need from others (including support services) to get it.
It:
* creates a partnership between people who use services and the services they use
* is designed to shift power towards the person and their allies, and to align energy and expertise around the person’s aspirations
* is an inclusive method, and it assumes that inclusion is a social and personal goal
* it values citizenship and contribution and asks services to be more responsive, flexible and individualised in the way they relate to an individual.
Person centred planning provides a very different way of helping someone to organise their life where care planning and assessment don’t seem to have moved things closer to real solutions.
Who should come on the course?
Half of those on the course will be involved voluntarily, and the other half will be those who are employed in providing support. The voluntary group might include people who use support organised by education, health and social services (for instance those attending day centres or who have paid care at home). It might also include their families and unpaid carers.
People who aren’t personally involved with support services are also welcome to apply for a place.
The course is suitable for those who are new to the ideas of person centred planning and also for those who have already been introduced to it and who seek to develop their facilitation skills. The main learning on the course will be by practising the use of person centred planning tools.
Course Details
The course will take place over six days in the Cairndale Hotel, English Street, Dumfries, DG1 2DF on the 23,24 & 25 May and 15,16 June & 27 June 2005. Each day will run from 9.30am – 4.30pm. Course participants will be asked to work individually and in partnership in-between course blocks.
Course Programme
Block 1
This block will introduce participants to the underpinning values of person centred planning and explore the problem it was designed to solve. We will introduce you to the different person centred planning tools and begin to explore and practice the facilitation skills for PATH and MAP.
Block 2
In addition to responding to what has been learned previously, this block will focus on Essential Lifestyle Planning and getting support right.
Block 3
This day will provide an opportunity for support on real planning work carried out since the previous block.
Who is organising the course?
The course is organised by Scottish Human Services Trust (SHS). SHS is an independent organisation working for greater social inclusion in Scotland. The course is part funded by the Scottish Executive Social Work Services Inspectorate and by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
How much does it cost?
The course is free to all participants. Lunch, refreshments and course materials will be provided. We should be able to meet reasonable expenses, including those for local travel, childcare or personal assistance, for the voluntary participants (i.e. not for those attending on behalf of their employer). An estimate of these should be provided to SHS Trust for approval.
What if I need extra support to be there?
We will try to make sure that people get the support they need to be on the course, whether this is material on audio tape, sign language interpreters or support to read the materials.
